Commissioners Corner
By Dick Scott
Chris Sorensen has
been selected by the Hickenlooper-Garcia transition team to serve on the
Homeland Security and Emergency Management Committee. Chris will also
be Kiowa County’s representative to the Homeland Security Board serving
a six county
Region here in SE
Colorado. These selections did not occur by chance but are a direct
result of the expertise and dedication Chris has for these programs. We
are indeed fortunate to have Chris serving our county and the SE region.
We will be well served to have his expertise voiced at the state level
as well.
Don
Oswald, Bill Koehler and I attended a meeting of the CARR (Citizens
Against Railroad Relocation) group in Haswell Last week. Although the
study regarding the proposed rail across western Kiowa Co. has been put
on hold temporarily other CDOT studies regarding rail and transit are
developing and could include the rail issue in Kiowa County. The
commissioners remain in support of the opposition by CARR.
We will
be discussing the 2011 budget at the Commissioner meeting this week and
will looking at ways to come closer to a balance.
Don and I will be attending the Colorado Counties Inc. Winter Conference
Nov. 29,30 and Dec1. We anticipate gaining insight to several issues
such as pending legislation, medical marijuana, energy transmission and
certainly budgets. It is a good time to visit with other commissioners
and gain their perspective of the many issues facing Colorado Counties.
I know that energy transmission will be a topic at the conference, we
have a meeting with energy people at our commissioners meeting this week
and there will be a regional meeting on transmission following the CCI
conference.
